How to Make Cannabis Massage Oil

How to Make Cannabis Massage Oil

We’ve had a surprising number of people message us regarding where they can purchase cannabis massage oil.

Unfortunately, topicals are still in the process of clearing some regulatory hurdles, meaning you won’t be able to find cannabis massage oil in stores quite yet. But did you know that it’s actually very easy to make cannabis massage oil at home? Here are two simple step by step recipes to create lovely cannabis massage oil in no time!

There are two routes you can go when making a massage oil. You may choose to use an oil that’s liquid at room temperature for a lighter massage oil – some good candidates for this are sweet almond oil and grapeseed oil. Alternatively, you can start with any infused oil that can be found in-store at Earth to Sky Cannabis!

Infused Oil

If you’re starting from scratch, you’re going to need to infuse your oil. For every ¼ cup of oil you use, add 1-2 tbsp of your favourite cannabis flower (make sure to grind it or mill it to a fine consistency). Our recommendation is to choose a balanced flower with equal amounts of CBD and THC – a real “best of both worlds” experience.

Preheat your oven to 250 degrees fahrenheit. In a sealed container, add your cannabis flower and oil. Place in your preheated oven for 30 minutes; remove, and let sit for 10 minutes. Strain through cheesecloth, and voila! Your very own infused oil.

From here, it’s a simple matter of adding your favourite essential oils. You can find these at most health food stores and online! Look around the web for some great ideas on specific blends for specific purposes.

Infused Body Butter

Once you have your infused oil you may decide to go a step further, using coconut oil and cacao butter to create a luxurious “whipped” cannabis body butter.

Mixing Bowl

Saucepan/Double Boiler

Fill your saucepan with water and place on low on your stove. Put your ingredients in the mixing bowl in this ratio:

  • 2 parts cacao butter
  • 1 part coconut oil
  • 1 part infused oil

So, for example, ½ cup cacao butter, ¼ cup coconut oil, and ¼ cup infused oil. Mix gently until fully melted and combined.

Place this mixture in the fridge for one hour until more solid but not set. At this point, remove from fridge, add your favourite essential oils (if desired), and use a hand mixer to “whip” air into this cannabis body butter mixture for 10 minutes. At the end, you should have a light and airy cannabis-infused body whip!

The best part about this is that both coconut oil and cacao butter melt slightly below body temperature, creating a luscious cannabis body whip that starts to melt and moisturize when it comes into contact with skin.

We hope you (and perhaps a special someone) enjoy these cannabis massage oil recipes!
